Augustinian named as Archbishop of Panama City

I am happy to communicate to all the members of the Order that the Holy Father has named our Brother José Domingo ULLOA MENDIETA, o.s.a, as Archbishop of Panama City, Panama.
He was born on December 24th, 1956, in Chitré, Panama. He was ordained a diocesan priest in Chitré, on December 17th, 1983. In 1987, he entered the Augustinian novitiate, and he made his first profession of vows in the Monastery of the El Escorial in 1988. Upon completing his initial formation in the Order, Fr. Ulloa returned to Panama.

After dedicating a number of years as a member of the formation team at the “Seminario San Agustín” in Panama, he once again went to Spain, where he did further studies in the area of Religious Life, Spirituality, and also Canon Law. He returned to Panama, and in the year 2002, he was named Vicar of the Vicariate of Panama, and also pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Chitré.

He was named Auxiliary Bishop of Panama City on February 26, 2004, and ordained a Bishop on April 17, 2004. His installation as Archbishop will be on April 17, 2010, anniversary of his Episcopal Ordination.

I wish to express our sincere congratulations, in the name of the entire Order, to the Archbishop-elect José. At the same time, I ask all the members of the Order to ask the Lord that he bless and enlighten our brother +José in the new ministry which he is about to begin as Archbishop of Panama City.

Fraternally,

P. Robert F. Prevost
                                                          Prior General O. S. A.
