Report on Meeting of Augustinian Provincials of Europe

The OAE, Organisation of Augustinians of Europe, held a meeting recently in our monastery in Krakow, Poland. At this meeting the provincials of Ireland, England/Scotland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Poland and the four provinces of Spain, together with the superior from Austria, a delegate from Malta and the Abbot of Bruno (Czech Republic), for three days shared with each other in prayer, meals, discussions and outings. While the cultures and details differed, the human experiences were very similar and a great exchange took place in an understanding and supportive atmosphere.

Some of our time was spent considering how we might continue to share our Augustinian   lives with others, both those who might seek to make the more traditional vowed  commitment  to the life and those who might discover and live other approaches to our  Augustinian life.

We prayed together, often in the beautiful Saint Catherine's Church or alternatively in one of its smaller Chapels. We shared ideas and innovations. The inspiring project in Hammersmith in London, or the opening of an international community on the walk to Santiago Di Compostela all captured our attention.

We were treated to a magnificent dinner by our Augustinian sisters whose unfinished school was a challenge to all present to offer assistance.

We spent our free time walking around this beautiful city, visiting the salt mines and we took a day to visit the heart-breaking memorial that is Auschwitz and its companion concentration camp, Birkenau. (See: News tab on: )

While there our attention was drawn to the photograph of the former Polish Provincial, Fr Wilhelm Gaczka OSA,who with four other friars, died in Auschwitz.

On our final day we were invited to celebrate with Fr Bill Faix OSA his 50th anniversary of Ordination. Bill, an American friar with a Polish grandfather had gone back to Poland to re-found the Order there on the 14th of July 1979 and the members of the fledgling Province who were present to celebrate with him recounted the early days of their lives together as they planned where and how they would live together in the spirit of Saint Augustine.

If you find yourself in Krakow anytime, be sure to visit the Augustinians there.
