Pope Francis has Opened the 184th Ordinary General Chapter of the Order

Yesterday, the feast of St. Augustine Pope Francis presided at the eucharist in the church of Sant' Agostino in Rome. This celebration was to mark the beginning of the 184th Ordinary General Chapter of the Order. This is the gathering which will elect the next Prior General of the Order who will take over from Fr. Robert Prevost who is completing his term of office. Fr. Robert, in his words of welcome to the Holy Father, highlighted the close historical links between the Order and the Holy See which, in fact, founded the Order by uniting a number of groups of hermits who all followed the Rule of St. Augustine. In his homily the Pope referred to St. Augustine as providing a model for our world of restlessness by his search for fulfilment which he eventually found on the path of faith. The General Chapter now continues its deliberations and will last for approximately 2-3 weeks.
